Citizens On Patrol (C.O.P) are a group of volunteers working from the Community Police Office who, on their own time, using their own cars and paying for their gas, patrol our communities as a crime prevention force supporting the RCMP.
Most of their service is done at night, checking on properties and looking for any suspicious persons or evidence of attempted break and enter in both public and private properties. They also keep watch on public properties such as schools and playgrounds where there might be violations of loitering laws.
The C.O.P volunteers also keep an eye on vehicles and drivers and have been instrumental in the apprehension of drivers under the influence by reporting to the local RCMP Highway Patrol.
The volunteers do not have the power of arrest. However, because of the instant radio contact with the Mounted Police, they can effect early arrests and prevent many crimes.
At present, the volunteer force is working for Cst. John Nuvoloni in the Fall River and Area Community Police Office and is managed and co-ordinated by Bernie Marshall. Citizens on Patrol are always looking for volunteers. To volunteer, contact Bernie Marshall at (902) 860-0365. The Community Office can be reached at (902) 860-4362.
