Dieppe Branch #90, Royal Canadian Legion began with the determination of one man who saw the necessity for a legion branch in this suburban area.Colin James Dawes who was a long-time resident of Waverley and very familiar with the area, carried out a complete survey and determined that there was sufficient numbers of ex-service personnel in the Fall River, Lakeview, Waverley, and Windsor Junction areas to form a legion branch. He held several meetings with Provincial Executives and received the necessary documents to complete and forward back to Provincial Command. Colin received the Imperial Service medal in recognition of the meritorious service to King and Country which he had rendered. He was discharged on December 31, 1918. An organizational meeting was held at the Waverley Amateur Athletic Hall in Waverley on February 12, 1946. Colin Dawes assumed the Chairmanship and briefly addressed the meeting, explaining the many advantages that the veteran is entitled to and can receive by becoming a member of the Legion. The selection of a name for the branch was brought before the meeting for discussion, recommendations were submitted by Veterans of the First World War and the Second World War. The meeting was attempting to find a name of a battle where Canada played a prominent role and in particular where Nova Scotians were involved. Dieppe seemed to be the most obvious choice because of Canada's most important participation in which the 2nd Canadian Division was involved. The name Dieppe was chosen unanimously.
