Forthcoming Events

Dieppe Day

Dieppe Day will be held at our Branch on Sunday 15 August 2004. A parade will be held, including a colour party. Further details will be promulgated later.

General Meetings

As usual this summer, there will be no general meetings during the months of July and August. They will resume in September. However meetings of the Executive will still be held on the first Thurday of the month.

Fish and Chip Fridays

Help is needed in the kitchen for fish and chip Fridays. Anyone who can volunteer to help is asked to contact Gail Poirier or Flo Marr at the Legion.

Gold Rush Days

A committee in Waverley has been formed to organize Gold Rush Days, which will be held from Wednesday 8th September until Sunday 12th September 2004. Jim Brimicombe is representing our Branch of the Legion. They are looking at kicking off with a crib tournament. Jim Brimicombe plans to put on a dance in the Legion on Saturday night, 11th September. The Ladies' Auxiliary wants to put on a meal of some sort. Jim also hopes we can have some participation in the parade, for example a float with veterans on it, and a colour party. However at present this is all in the planning stage and nothing definite has yet been decided.

Our Roof

The following is a letter from our President, Ron Banks to all members of Dieppe Branch #90, concerning the roof:

Dear Comrades,

I am quite sure you are aware of the poor condition of the Legion roof. Over the past several years hundreds of dollars have been spent doing repairs to no avail.

At a General Meeting held on 15 April 2004 members present voted in favour of proceeding with a new 'pitched' design roof. I anticipate the cost will be in the range of $80,000.00 however we may discover problems unknown to us now that could result in higher costs. The potential problem would be from water damage over the years.

Comrade Maurice Taylor is our Branch Co-ordinator for this project and he plans to begin construction by mid-June.

Funding (in the amount of $80,000.00) has been obtained from the Heritage Credit Union in Fall Rover. However the need to fund raise is essential. Along with the usual flea markets, raffles and other avenues we have pursued in the past, we are seeking members to 'buy a truss'. Since we will require approximately 100 trusses to complete this project we are asking members to donate the cost of a truss of perhaps share the cost with a fellow member. Trusses cost $250.00 each.

Comrades, wehn I took on the position of President of Dieppe Branch my last thought was that of requesting donations from members, and I must admit I did not see myself involved in a project of this size of financial commitment. I am convinced this is the proper route to take in order to preserve our Branch for the coming years. We have several dedicated members who are always available to help and a Ladies' Auxiliary second to none.

Dieppe Branch #90 began on 26 February 1946 under the direction of President Colin James Dawes and over the years saw many changes to the building but not the spirit. When I relate to the name of our Branch (Dieppe) I consider our Comrades who fought in the raid on Dieppe, I believe it is paramount that we do everything possible to achieve this goal.

Sincerely,

Ron Banks,
President
