The Waverley Heritage Society was incorporated under the Societies Act of Nova Scotia in April 1979 under the name "Heritage Society of District 14". The originating purpose for founding the Society was the preservation of the historic Canadian National Railways Station in Windsor Junction. Despite many efforts by the Society, the station was demolished in the summer of 1984. However, the Society still exists, under the name "Waverley Heritage Society". This name was chosen due to the many changes of the district number to avoid the need to rename the Society if the number changed again.The Objects of the Society are: • To preserve and maintain the heritage of Waverley and area. • To preserve artifacts, pictures, papers, records and items of historical and cultural significance of Waverley and surrounding areas. The Society consists of the following positions: • Officers: • President - Mrs. Annie Blois Smith • 1st Vice President - Mrs. Evangeline Brown • Secretary - Mrs. Marilyn Clarke • Treasurer & Membership - Mrs. Judy Johnston • Committee Chairpersons: • Publicity - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Edgar • Board of Directors: • Mrs. Evangeline Brown • Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Edgar • Mrs. Judy Johnston • Mrs. Annie Smith • Mrs. Diane Swanzey Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. New members are always welcomed. The Heritage Society holds different events during the year, such as their annual plant sale in June. They also operate the Waverley Heritage Museum and hold afternoon teas on Fridays during July and August. The Society will assist those whose families lived in Waverley to research their genealogy. The Museum is open from 9:30 to 4:30 during July and August and by appointment during the off-season. (Phone Annie Blois Smith (902) 861-2427.) Admission is free, donations are appreciated. |
