The Nova Scotia Firefighters School offers training and education to volunteer and paid firefighters in Nova Scotia. The basic training programs teach firefighters how fire behaves, about fire extinguishers, and how to use hose lines, water, ladders and self-contained breathing apparatus. The firefighters learn how to extinguish fires and rescue people. Other courses at the school include Fire Service Leadership and Management, and specialized courses on topics such as vehicle extrication, fire safety systems, and others. The school owns 30 acres of land, of which 20 acres acts as a buffer zone between the training facilities and the nearby homes. In addition to classrooms, the training facilities include a three-story rescue tower with interior stairwells, a smoke house, a structural fire building, a propane trainer, and a breathing apparatus maze. There is also a marine firefighting mock-up, for training of the offshore oil industry.
